A floor is an inside lower horizontal surface of any building structure. Floors are the most used part of the building and they have to sustain the wear and tear by bearing the weight of walls, pillars, plumbing, sewerage, furniture and even the load of people and cars, etc. Floors also require regular cleaning to remove the dirt and to maintain its beauty. Floors need to be sturdy so they can take the load bearing for several years. Because floors meet many needs, some essential to safety, floors are built to strict building codes.

Floor Tiles are typically used in covering the floors of rooms, hallways, kitchens or any horizontal surface. Floor tiles are typically set in various patterns with a mortar consisting of cement, sand and waterproofing additives.

Floor tiles are commonly made of both natural and manufactured products such as stone, marble, granite and ceramic and they could have both rough and polished upper surface, depending on individual choices as well the climate of the particular area. Modern buildings often have slate floors tiles, porcelain floor tiles and rubber floor tiles.

Manufactured ceramic floor tiles, marble floor tiles and granite floor tiles have glazed (polished) upper surface and they are slippery, especially when wet. These also need good maintenance and cleaning as dirt and spillages immediately show over it. Bathroom floor tiles must be sealed with good sealant materials as water may seep through its grout lines.  

Natural stone tiles, on the other hand can look elegant but not much variety can be found in their color and pattern, and they require more planning for use and installation. Granite or marble tiles are sawn on both sides and then polished or finished on the upper side, so that they have a uniform thickness. Mosaic floor tiles can be used to create interesting and attractive patterns on the floors.

The choice of using the type of floor tiles largely depends on various factors like culture and climatic conditions of a particular area, availability of materials, and of course your budget.
